Every year, Mental Health Awareness Week raises awareness of mental health issues and promotes understanding, support and wellbeing. It's a topic we strongly support at Arden Winch.

The 2024/2025 Health and Safety Executive report statistics show that a total of 1.9 million workers suffered from work related ill health and injuries, resulting in 40.1 million working days lost and an estimated £22.9 billion cost to society and business.

As suppliers of safety equipment, PPE and workwear we instinctively took note of the physical injuries first. Assessing what areas people may need help with and highlighting the potential gaps in peoples understanding of safety.

511,000 workers suffered musculoskeletal disorders
54,000 workers sustained injuries falling from height
80,000 workers sustained non-fatal injuries

But worryingly the biggest figures are for stress, depression and anxiety with 964,000 reports throughout the year.

It's not just a number; that's just under 1 million workers suffering at work.

These figures hit close to home for so many people and reinforce the vital need for employers to not just enforce physical safety regulations but to prioritise workplace wellbeing and build supportive work cultures.

It is our responsibility to keep you physically safe but it is everyone's responsibility to make workplaces healthier and happier.

Building Expansion Phase 2

An exciting second round of building work is currently in progress at our main site in Sheffield.

In 2023 we undertook a major investment to expand our in-house branding department. The completion of this gave us significant space for new machines, new members of the team and new storage areas. We instantly recorded benefits of increased work load capacity and decreased turn-around times.

Since the previous extension we have proudly made numerous investments on our sites including:
🔹EV Charging stations,
🔹Multiple solar panel arrays,
🔹New product releases,
🔹A ground source heat pump installation,
🔹Upgrades to warehouse equipment,

And much much more.

This second expansion will create extra warehouse storage and allow for a larger goods-in area, it isn't just about growing our footprint - it's all about delivering even more value to our customers.

With increased space and improved operational flow we will be able to:
⭐ Book in orders from manufactures faster than ever
⭐ Hold new stock lines to reduce lead times
⭐ Support large customer orders/project more efficiently
⭐ Enhance our overall service

As we are now halfway into the process we are on the count down for the internal fit out to begin and being able to utilize the space.

Carbon Policies, Website Creation and Product Progression

Behind the scenes Arden Winch is continually undertaking major investments and transformations to update our product range, service levels and enviromental footprint.

For over 200 years Arden Winch has been supplying the UK with high quality sustainable PPE, Workwear, Uniforms, Footwear and Janitorial goods. In recent years our team has been further developing our forward-thinking approach to investments.

To take a closer look we need to go back to 2022. In this year we undertook an independent energy audit of the business to identify what improvements and savings could be made. This provided the foundations for our carbon management plan and the investments needed to make the business more sustainable. Our aim? To become Carbon Neurtal by 2030!

Since then, we have invested more than £220,000 in multiple Solar Panel Arrays, SolaX Triple Power Batteries, EV charging stations, LED Lighting and a Ground Source Heat Pump to prevent an estimated 26.3 tonnes of carbon entering the atmosphere every year. This is a huge 47% reduction in company emissions from the baseline year, to put that into perspective this is equivalent to 13,150 fire extinguishers.

2023 came around and our big investment of the year was a brand new Embroidery Department Extension. Building work was completed in the first half of October and with the help of a new work structure, new machines and new members added to our team we quickly got the new space up and running. Instantly we recorded the positive effect this had increasing our workload capacity and decreasing our turn-around times.

2024 was a year full of connections, charity support and product research. We officially became a gold member with Made In Yorkshire, we continued our long-standing membership work with Eurosafe pushing forward ESPRO products and we attended events by Sheffield Chamber Of Commerce and numerous organisations in our community. We took part in the Sheffield Children's Hospital 20th Snowflake Appeal, donated 3 Ginkgo Biloba trees to Sheffield City Council and provided The Archer Project with bags full of our warmest winter clothes. Being at the forefront of supplying equipment we further assessed how the products we sell impact the environment and made key changes to our ranges, implementing more recycled products from sustainable manufacturers.

2025 so far has been spent raising awareness of PPE facts and helping our customers keep safe. Where are we now on our investment journey?

Currently at our main Sheffield site we are undergoing a building extension for a dedicated goods in department and extra warehouse stock storage. Coming up soon is also our brand new website launch!

Our Carbon Neutral Journey

Back in 2022 we took an important step in reviewing how we as a company could take action to limit our impact on the environment, leading us to set our goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.

This goal is not driven by money saving or payback but for the invaluable reason of improving our environment/climate for the furure.

We began our journey with a baseline figure of 55.6 tonne.

During 2022 and 2023 we added 2 solar panel arrays, a ground source heat pump and changed all our internal lighting to energy saving LED's, including some montion sensor controlled.

Our next step was changing company directors cars to full electric and our sales managers cars to plug in hybrid.

Coming into 2024 our new figure is 34.2 tonne, a reduction of 38.5%.

Of that remaining figure 68.8% or 24 tonne is produced by our 8 delivery vehicles. The moment any manufacturer can provide a workable environmentally friendly delivery van (the current electric vans when fully loaded have very poor range) Arden Winch will change.

This year our next objective is reducing the 10.2 tonne which is not produced by our delivery vans.

A Look Back On Our History

Arden Winch are the industry experts as a top trusted UK supplier, but little know the extent of our history.

The Yorkshire roots of Arden Winch established in Sheffield 1812, with the R. Richmond & Son Brush Company who manufactured quality brushes during the city’s industrial boom. The business built a strong reputation for craftsmanship and dependable supply, supporting local industries and factories, including throughout the First World War.

In 1939, as the Second World War began, Laurence Arden Winch acquired the business, introducing the name of Arden Winch and establishing the foundations of the company as it is known today.

The company continued to grow under family ownership, with Laurence’s son, Richard Winch, joining the business alongside his successful writing career for the BBC. Following Richard’s passing, his son Nicholas became the third generation of the Winch family to continue the company’s journey.

As industries evolved, so did Arden Winch.

Over the years our product range quickly expanded beyond brushes, proudly making us Yorkshire’s oldest supplier of Janitorial goods, PPE, Workwear and Branded Uniform.

Growth throughout the region led to the opening of sub-branches, helping to establish Arden Winch as a trusted supplier to industries across Yorkshire and the wider UK.

Today, in 2026, Winch family remains actively involved in the business, continuing over 200 years of heritage, service and expertise and Arden Winch continues to operate proudly from a Sheffield headquarters, with a supporting branch in Nottingham.

New and improved: more storage, new equipment, a bigger team.

We are proud to inform that our heat seal and embroidery logo department is better than ever. Building work was completed in the first half of October and with the help of a new work structure and new members added to our team we have now not only got back up and running but are ahead of our previous schedule to meet customers needs and expectations.

The investments into our premises has not only given us more safe storage space but has also given us extra room for new machines within the department. Since October we have instantly seen the possitive effect this has had onto our workload capacity and how this has decreased our turn-around times.

MIY Expo Exhibitor Spotlight: Arden Winch – Keeping People Safe Since 1812

At Arden Winch, we’ve been keeping people safe and comfortable since 1812 – and we’re just getting started. As a trusted supplier of certified PPE, professional uniforms, custom-branded workwear, and janitorial products, we’re proud to serve a wide range of sectors with reliable, risk-assessed solutions backed by genuine expertise.

This year, we’ll be showcasing our offering at the Made in Yorkshire Expo on Thursday, 16th October 2025 at the Accu Stadium, Huddersfield.

As part of Made in Yorkshire’s Exhibitor Spotlight series, a member of the MIY team recently caught up with our Managing Director, Steve Barker, to ask a few quick questions about what drives us, what we’ve achieved recently, and what exciting things we’ve got coming up next.

1. In one sentence – what do we do best?

We’re a trusted supplier of certified PPE, professional uniforms, custom-branded workwear, and janitorial goods – all backed by expert advice and a commitment to keeping people safe, comfortable, and compliant no matter the job.

2. What’s the driving mission or purpose behind Arden Winch right now?

Our mission is simple: to keep people safe and comfortable, wherever they work. We’re passionate about providing customers with the right equipment, not just selling products. That’s why every member of our sales team is NEBOSH or IOSH accredited – giving clients proper, risk-based advice on what PPE is actually suitable for their working environment.

As Steve put it:

“You shouldn’t be buying PPE just because it’s a pair of boots – you need to risk assess. And that’s what we do.”

We’re also proud to be one of just 42 UK members of the BSIF Registered Safety Supplier Scheme, which guarantees our PPE is properly tested and certified – a critical safeguard in an industry where counterfeit certifications are still worryingly common.

3. What’s been the biggest milestone over the past 12 months?

The last year has been transformational. We’ve implemented a new ERP system (OrderWise) that has overhauled our internal operations, giving us the digital infrastructure we need to scale. It hasn’t been without its challenges, but it’s already improving workflow and giving our warehouse team more control and visibility.

We’ve also stepped up our sustainability efforts, working towards carbon neutrality by reducing emissions, adopting greener practices, and embedding environmental responsibility into our everyday operations.

4. Any exciting developments on the horizon?

Absolutely. We’ve just completed a major site expansion, giving us an additional 5,000 cubic feet of warehouse capacity and a brand-new dedicated goods-in area. This not only improves stock flow and organisation, but empowers our warehouse team with dedicated scanning stations and better operational independence.

We’re also set to launch a brand-new customer-focused website with full bespoke portals, live reporting, spend controls, and a dramatically improved user experience. It’s being built by a dynamic local Sheffield agency and will evolve with us, thanks to future plans for AI integration, smarter search, and SEO-driven growth.

“We’ve taken a couple of steps back this year to take major leaps forward next year,” says Steve. “The systems, site and tech we’re putting in place will set us up to scale properly in 2026 and beyond.”

5. Tell us something surprising or little-known about us

Not many people realise we’ve been around for over 213 years – originally founded in 1812, with roots in Sheffield’s manufacturing and industrial heritage. The Winch family is still proudly involved in the business, and we still keep our original handwritten sales ledgers as a reminder of just how far we’ve come.

Embroidery Extension Underway!

We are happy to announce the work we are undergoing to create a brand new extension for our ever increasing embroidery department.

After a record year of sales for our logoed garments we are almost doubling the size of our embroidery department. We are proud to report how benifical this will become to help us grow further and to help achieve quicker lead times for our customers.. for the likes of uniforms for our amazing national health services and student tabards for universities.

With work due to be complete for the start of October we are looking forward to a busy autumn period in our new and improved facilities.
